We reduced the carbon footprint of our production!
Thu Feb 11 11:36:00 2021
Last year, we measured the carbon footprint of our production and since then we have taken steps to reduce it. This is part of our responsibility work, where we invest in, for example, the environmental impact of our operations.
When the carbon footprint of our production was originally measured, the result was 1,024.2 t CO2eq per year. Emissions from electricity, heating, waste management and forklift operations at Oulu's production facilities were taken into account when assessing the carbon footprint of production. Heat produced by biofuels was not included in the carbon footprint.
After the measurement, Oulu's production switched to using electricity produced entirely by hydropower in 2020 and replaced some of the diesel forklifts with electric forklifts. After these changes, the carbon footprint of production was measured again and it is now 662.1 t CO2eq per year - so the carbon footprint of production decreased by 35% compared to the previous year!
How big is our carbon footprint?
The size of the carbon footprint is hard to think of if it is not compared to anything. For example, in Finland, the carbon footprint of industry and construction is about 7 million t CO2 eq per year and, for comparison, about 10 million t in domestic traffic. Nestor's share of the carbon footprint of industry and construction is 662.1 t CO2e, or 0.009%.
